00100 I found our telephone conversation quite stimulating,
00200	and have the following remarks:
00300
00400 1. It seems to me that there are two sources of diversity
00500	in ways of life: diversity arising from the force of diverse
00600	material circumstances, and diversity stemming from individual
00700	inclinations and the influence of diverse ideas. T?e former is
00800	on its way down as material circumstance becomes less restricting.
00900	(When I saw an Eskimo carry a watermelon out of the general store
01000	in Barrow, Alaska, it immediately came into my mind to buy another
01100	and offer it to some Eskimo children if they would let me photograph
01200	them sitting on the pack ice eating it in the classical pickaninny
01300	style, but I feared I couldn't carry it off without giving offence
01400	to someone). The latter should be on its way up as more people
01500	have more options, but I couldn't prove it.
01600
01700 2. I have not met Dyson and have read only a few of his
01800	things, but I suppose you do him a↓ instice. I have met O'Neill,
01900	and my complaint about him is that along with his technological
02000	fantasy that involves too much wishful thinking, he shares
02100	the widespread nostalgia for the simple rural life. It seems that
02200	he envisions people making an enormously sophisticated technological
02300	effort in order to live like peasants.
02400
02500 3. Quite clearly my worries and fa∨tasies are different
02600	from yours. My hope is that an improved technology aimed at
02700	aiding human individuality will lead to more interesting and
02800	varied lives. Some ideas for this are expressed in some of the
02900	essays that are enclosed. My worry is that the current pessimistic
03000	intellectual mood will prevent the necessary increase in prosperity
03100	and technological capability.
03200
03300 4. Our conversation was too short for me to understand
03400	the precise nature of your concerns about loss of diversity
03500	and spiritual values. I am not even sure these are the words
03600	you used. Some of my concerns about your concerns is speculation
03700	based on other peoples programs for dealing with such problems.
03800	Concern over the American middle class having materialistic values
03900	stands on two legs. The first is the mistaken belief that it
04000	is not feasible to continue our present energy and material
04100	flow and increase it, and that it is infeasible for other coun?ries
04200	to flow our example. As you said, this is not the main issue,
04300	and the people who express these fears most strongly generally
04400	are more interested in getting us to repent than to try to solve
04500	the technological problems. The other concern is a belief that
04600	a simpler life it better for us. Well, sometimes I like my
04700	posessions and at other times I feel entangled in them. I can
04800	well believe that other people may feel this more strongly and
04900	more constantly than I do, but it seems to me that they are
05000	substantially free to shed what they find encumbering and
05100	are also free to try to persuade others to do likewise. What
05200	worries me is the moralistic attack on people who like
05300	posessions and a desire to get the government to promote
05400	their ideology. ssell Train's article in Science of
05500	June xx on energy policy expresses this toome extent.
05600	This seems tyrannical to me and also seems to counter the
05700	desire for diversity.
05800
05900 I am sure I have not at all addressed the central
06000	part of yo spiritual concern and would like to know more,
06100	especially about where it impinges on social policy.
